Meanwhile, Matt tries to help reform his alcoholic best friend Nick, but Nick keeps lashing out in bursts of irrational violence. Yet even as the three want to strangle each other, irrepressible humor bonds them as they struggle to overcome their self-destructive ways.

Divorced father Bob Weber has been embroiled in a ten-year custody battle for his daughter Chelsea. His ex-wife has brainwashed Chelsea into believing that Bob abandoned her and her mother. After getting the perspective of a new judge, Bob is granted trial custody of 14-year old Chelsea for the summer. She is not happy about the arrangement and wants nothing to do with her father; locking herself in her room she listens to show tunes all day. Bob’s therapist suggests that he produce a musical for his daughter to star in. To help them work out their interpersonal issues, the subject of the show will be divorce and it will feature a cast of children.
